Workshop on Implementing a Study on Small Power Plants Using Solar Energy Window

The General Investment Authority participated in the workshop on solar mini-grids in Aden, which is part of the second phase of the Emergency Electricity Supply Project in Yemen, funded by the World Bank and implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) (YEEAP).

The workshop aims to introduce participants to the concept of solar mini-grids and their role in enhancing access to clean energy sources and presenting the experiences of other countries in this field, with a focus on analyzing the reasons for success or failure in these experiences to benefit from them in developing a model that suits the Yemeni environment. This is done by finding international best practices and innovative business models and adapting policies that suit the Yemeni context. It also aims to develop sustainable frameworks for solar energy networks to support rural electricity and develop implementable recommendations on financing mechanisms, site selection criteria and technical specifications for solar energy networks, and enhance cooperation between stakeholders and participation of local communities.

The event also reviewed international experiences related to small grids, in addition to societal and financial considerations and administrative and regulatory frameworks.

The event was held at the Lotus Hotel from 16-18 January 2025, with the participation of 30 participants from the Ministry of Electricity and its affiliated institutions, the General Authority for Rural Water, and relevant government agencies, in addition to representatives of local communities, private sector energy sector workers, and small solar grid operators.
